About Miami Air International

Miami Air International was an American charter airline headquartered in the Miami, Florida area. Established in 1990, the airline began flight operations in October 1991 and developed its business around domestic and international passenger charter services. It served a variety of customers, including corporate groups, cruise operators, professional sports teams, entertainment organizations, government agencies, and the United States military.

Unlike traditional scheduled airlines operating fixed passenger routes, Miami Air International specialized in charter transportation. Its aircraft were arranged for dedicated group journeys, allowing customers to organize flights according to their travel schedules, passenger requirements, and destinations. The airline became known for its customized charter services and operations from Miami International Airport.

Miami Air International Charter Services

Passenger charter operations were central to Miami Air International's business model. The airline provided dedicated aircraft for groups requiring coordinated transportation within the United States and to international destinations. Its customer base included sports organizations, corporate incentive groups, cruise companies, schools, tour operators, and entertainment groups.

Charter arrangements allowed customers to plan group travel around specific departure times and destinations instead of depending entirely on published airline schedules. Aircraft seating configurations could be arranged to accommodate different passenger requirements, including premium seating, coach seating, and mixed cabin layouts.

Military and Government Charter Operations

Miami Air International also supported government and military transportation requirements. Its operations included passenger and cargo movements associated with military assignments and government travel. The airline participated in transportation activities connected with the US military's Civil Reserve Air Fleet program.

These assignments required coordination involving aircraft availability, passenger movements, operational planning, and destination arrangements. Military and government charters formed an important part of the airline's historical business activities.

Miami Air International Aircraft Fleet

The airline primarily operated Boeing aircraft during its history. Its later passenger charter operations were strongly associated with the Boeing 737-800, a narrowbody aircraft used for domestic and international group transportation.

Aircraft Operated

  • Boeing 737-800
  • Boeing 737-400
  • Boeing 727-200
  • McDonnell Douglas MD-80 family aircraft

The Boeing 737-800 became the most recognizable aircraft type associated with Miami Air International's later operations. Its passenger configurations were adapted for different charter assignments, including premium seating and high-capacity group travel.

Miami Air International Destinations and Operations

Miami Air International operated domestic and international charter flights from its base in South Florida. Its charter activities connected customers with destinations across North America, the Caribbean, Central America, and other international markets.

The airline's operations were not structured around a conventional network of daily scheduled passenger services. Instead, flight destinations and departure arrangements depended on charter contracts and customer requirements. This flexible operating model allowed the airline to support group transportation and specialized travel assignments.

Corporate and Group Travel

Corporate and incentive travel represented another important area of Miami Air International's historical operations. Businesses and organizations used charter flights to transport employees, clients, and invited guests for conferences, company events, incentive programs, and other group activities.

Dedicated charter arrangements helped groups travel together on coordinated schedules. Depending on the assignment, aircraft seating layouts and onboard arrangements could be adapted to the needs of the customer.

Sports Team and Cruise Charter Services

Miami Air International served professional sports organizations and major cruise operators during its operating years. Sports team charters required coordinated transportation for players, coaches, support staff, and equipment. Cruise-related operations supported passenger movements associated with cruise travel and related transportation arrangements.

These specialized services demonstrated the airline's focus on group transportation rather than conventional individual-ticket scheduled operations.

History and Closure of Miami Air International

Miami Air International began operations in 1991 and gradually developed a charter business serving commercial, government, military, and leisure-related customers. Over the years, its Boeing aircraft supported a wide range of passenger transportation assignments.

In March 2020, the original Florida-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It subsequently ceased flight operations in May 2020 after failing to secure the investment required to continue its business. The bankruptcy proceedings were converted to Chapter 7 liquidation.

Certain assets and certificate authority were later acquired by a separate Delaware corporation using the Miami Air International name. In September 2020, the US Department of Transportation approved the transfer of interstate certificate authority to that company. However, in March 2024, the Department dismissed its application for interstate and foreign charter air transportation authority.

Consequently, Miami Air International should be regarded as a former airline rather than a currently operating passenger carrier. Its historical aircraft, charter services, and aviation activities remain part of its legacy in the American charter airline industry.

Why Miami Air International Was Recognized

  • Charter airline specialization: Focused on dedicated passenger transportation rather than a conventional scheduled network.
  • Group travel: Served corporate groups, sports teams, cruise operators, schools, and entertainment organizations.
  • Military transportation: Supported historical government and military charter assignments.
  • Boeing aircraft: Operated Boeing 737 aircraft, including the 737-800.
  • International operations: Conducted charter flights connecting destinations in the United States and overseas markets.

Miami Air International Airline Information

Miami Air International was identified by the IATA airline designator LL and the ICAO code BSK. Its historical operating base was Miami International Airport in Florida, United States.
